Pauline Nahimana and Tharcisse Bagumako (Continued.)
Bagumako: I thought that was my end. I heard how they told her they would kill them if she did not show us where we were hidden. I heard it all.
Pauline: They searched for them in the house and they could not find them. They asked me once again where they were and I answered they were not there. This time Juma brought a container of fuel. They told me they would burn us. "You prevented us from destroying his house and you are trying to save them," they added, "We are going to burn your house with them in it."
"Burn this house and the whole of Ruyigi Quarter will burn," I told them.
They went away again but promised they would come back. By then the children and their mother had left and I was still with old Bagumako. He was still shivering. We gave him food but he refused to eat. "Where is Ferdinand?" He asked. "Where is my wife?" Bagumako was very worried about his family. I told him that I have already sent his wife and children away and that if they had not been stopped by the killers, they would already have reached safety. When I mentioned that the killers threatened to burn the house, he was terrified. I asked Bagumako to climb and hide in the tree. That tree is still there.
Bagumako climbed in the tree just as the killers returned. They had axes and machetes.
Bagumako: As she knew there was nobody inside her house, she invited them to search it and to leave them in peace. They entered and they didn't find anybody. They went away but they told here they would be back.
Pauline: "If you see the Tutsi inside, kill them!" we told them. Bagumako was hiding in the tree and saw everything. My father and I stayed sitting outside. The killers told us they would kill us because we helped the Tutsi get away. They told us we would suffer the consequences.
