“'It is you Makangira who is still hiding the Tutsi,' they told me. 'It would be best to kill you together with them.' I still held my machete. 'Before you kill him,'' I told them, 'I will kill you or you have to kill me first.'"
Evariste Makangira, Joseph Sindimwo, and Paul Ntiranyibagira (Continued.)

Evariste: After some time Joseph told me, "Let me go, I do not want to die here in your house!"

Joseph: "I am grateful that you have tried to save me," I told him. "You have been so kind to me. As I have been bleeding for a long time, I may die here and people will blame you for killing me. You cannot even find a place to bury me. I do not want people to say tomorrow that you are a killer."

Evariste: "Wait until 11PM," I told him, "by then the killers would have gone to sleep." I tried to cover him with a blanket but as he was very tall. The blanket was too short to cover the whole body. “As you are so tall, don’t you see that the killers will easily identify you?” I told him. I decided to accompany him. When we arrived at the main road, we were stopped by the killers. “It is you Makangira who is still hiding the Tutsi," they told me. "It would be best to kill you together with them.” I still held my machete. "Before you kill him," I told them, "I will kill you or you have to kill me first." I told Joseph that we should try to run away, and so we did. We jumped a canal and run away. They didn’t follow us. Joseph crossed the canal and went to the Zone. That is what happened.

When I came back, they beat me and accused me of having saved the Tutsi. I apologized and they stopped beating me. However they told me I will suffer the consequences of what I did. The following day I went to the market and I met there many Tutsi. Everyone was buying me beers. They were congratulating me. There was much beer. They thanked me for having saved their relative. They wished me good life. The following day the priest came to bless us together with the persons we saved.

Meanwhile the wrongdoers came and robbed all my belongings. They even injured me. My body is full of wounds. However they didn’t kill me. They robbed me of 600,000Fbu that I had on me. They never came back.
