"At 8PM I saw people approaching me with guns and machetes. They said there were looking for me, Paul Ntiranyibagira. When I saw them, I ran away and they ran after me. I ran until Evariste's home in Ruyigi Quarter. He let me in."
Evariste Makangira, Joseph Sindimwo, and Paul Ntiranyibagira (Continued.)

Joseph: That is the way he saved me. If it had not been for him, I would have died. I have ten children. They would have been orphaned or killed. I am still alive due to Makangira. It's due to him that I am still living with my family.

Paul: In 1993 when President Ndadaye was killed, I was living in Muyinga Quarter, on the Second Street. At 8PM I saw people approaching me with guns and machetes. They said there were looking for me, Paul Ntiranyibagira. When I saw them, I ran away and they ran after me. I ran until Evariste's home in Ruyigi Quarter. He let me in. They looked for me and they couldn't find me. Then they came to his house and asked him, "Didn't Paul enter here?"

Evariste: "Is there anyone who entered your house?" they asked. "No!" I replied. They still wanted to come in and search. I grabbed my machete. "I will kill anyone who will attempt to enter my house!"

"Is it you who is still protecting the Tutsi?" They asked.

"Why do you ask that?" They said they were sure Paul entered my house. They said they would kill me if they found the Tutsi there. I told them to go right ahead.

Paul: He swore that I did not enter his house. They asked him to allow them to search for me inside. He refused and then he took his machete as he mentioned. He told them they would have to kill him before they could enter the house. After some time they went away. After they have left Evariste's home, they decided they to stop searching. They came back. Again he swore no one could enter his house. They stayed around until 10PM. At 10PM they went away.

Throughout that time I was hiding under the bed. Then he came in and he asked me to accompany me. He said that at the Zone they were accustomed to seeing him. He accompanied me until we reached the border between Kinama and Cibitoke and I went in Cibitoke. I went to my uncle's house on the Fifth Avenue. I stayed there until today. I am very grateful because I have been saved by this old man. If it was not his efforts, I would have been killed.
