"I was hiding under the bed, very close to the wall. I gave a breast to my baby so that he would not cry. They did not see me and they left."
Georgette Mahwera and Anne Marie Nzeyimana (Continued.)

Georgette: "You have a Tutsi here," they told me, "You helped her escape from the market."

I denied it, "There is nobody inside."

"You have one," they persisted. "We know you took her from the market and you brought her to your house."

I invited them to enter and search for themselves if they didn't believe me.

"Are you sure there is nobody inside?"

I said yes and they left without coming in.

Anne Marie was frightened, shivering, and weeping. She was not able to breastfeed her child. "Don't be afraid." I told her, "No one is going to harm you. Stay here in my house."

Anne Marie: At night more people came back. They were not from the area. They may have been from Kamenge or somewhere else. There were many of them and they stood outside Georgette's home.

Georgette: It was my neighbours who were telling them that I was hiding Anne Marie in my house.

Anne Marie: "This is the end," I thought. "I am going to die now." Georgette opened her door and asked them what they were looking for.

"Give us your Tutsi," they told her, "the one you took from the market. You hid her and you must tell us where she is. If you refuse, we will kill both of you."

She allowed them to enter and search the house. They went into one room and they did not find me. Then they went into her bedroom. I was hiding under the bed, very close to the wall. I gave a breast to my baby so that he would not cry. They did not see me and they left.
