Georgette Mahwera

"They were seeking out the Tutsi as if they were looking for animals to slaughter. When she saw them, Anne Marie came over to me and said, 'Do you see these people who are looking for Tutsi? This is my end!'"
Georgette Mahwera and Anne Marie Nzeyimana
Georgette saved Anne Marie and her child during the crisis. Georgette and former Cibitoke administrator Laurent Gahungu, also mentioned in these testimonies, were honoured during a performance in Kinama in April 2006, when this interview took place.

Georgette: I live in the Commune of Kinama and I have five children. I was running a business together with Anne Marie in the market. It was hard work. If we did not get enough customers, our children would not eat.

When President Melchior Ndadaye was killed, people started to kill each other. At Musaga, Hutu were killed. In Kinama, where Hutu were the majority, Tutsi were killed. Many ran away.

Anne Marie: The young men in Kinama were very frustrated. One day they came to the market. They had knives.

Georgette: They were seeking out the Tutsi as if they were looking for animals to slaughter. When she saw them, Anne Marie came over to me and said, "Do you see these people who are looking for Tutsi? This is my end!" She thought they would kill her. I told her to follow me. I don't even remember how we passed through them. I covered her with my clothes and we walked slowly until we reached our neighbourhood.

Anne Marie: When we got to her home, Georgette told me, "go hide under the bed." As I had left my child in the market, she went back there and brought him to me. I was feeling very bad.

The young men followed Georgette and asked her, "Why did you hide that Tutsi in your house? You know that the Tutsi killed Ndadaye?" She replied, "That woman did not kill the President. When he was assassinated she was right here, in Kinama." They ordered her to surrender me to them. She refused. She told them I was not in her house.
