"I knew that if other Hutu heard he was with me, they would kill us both. I woke up early, around 5AM. I put him on my bike and I rode with him on the main road."
Pierre Nyambere and Patrice Ciza (Continued.)

"They came to Gakungwe and they stole our cows and goats. They even demolished our houses.”

I agreed with him that the security situation was bad and that it would be impossible for him to safely reach the army garrison where he could join the other Tutsi who have gone for protection there.

Patrice: Pierre asked me to hurry and enter his house. I am still grateful to him. He hid me under the bed and I rested for a while.

Pierre: I gave Patrice a shirt to put on. I told him that I would check whether people were still following him. The killers might have already given up. I went out and looked on the road. For about fifteen minutes I didn’t see anyone. But then, at around 7:00PM, when it was getting dark, I saw two men approaching. They were whispering something I didn’t hear.

Patrice: God protected us and they went away after a little while.

Pierre: I went back home. “Are you afraid of being here?” I asked him.

Patrice: “If it’s fear of dying, I feel like like I’ve already died," I answered. "There is no problem I will stay here.”

Pierre: I told him, “As you are here, you will not die.” We stayed there and they serve us food, we ate together and he slept in my house that night.

At the time the Hutu were very angry. Whenever they saw Tutsi in their areas, they might harm them. The close relatives I was living with were also worried. “If the killers happen to come here and find Patrice, don’t you think we would face many problems?” they asked me.

"We have no choice!" I answered. "As I have decided to save Patrice by hiding him, I will accept what God will do.” I left it in God's hands.
