"At around 4PM, Hutu killers arrived. They came from Mubone. Their clothes were torn. They were covered with the blood of our cows and goats which they have slaughtered."

Pierre saved Patrice during the crisis. Pierre was honoured during a performance in Ruziba, in April 2006, when this interview was conducted.

Patrice: I was born in Gakungwe on the other side of the Muguere river.

In 1993, three days after President Ndadaye was killed, Hutu began to come and steal our cows and goats. The situation got worse and worse. One day they began to physically attack us and to loot our homes. They started at 7:30AM and were at it until the army arrived at around 4:00PM. The soldiers came from Kabezi and they shot and killed four people.

All the inhabitants of that area, both Hutu and Tutsi, fled from the soldiers. But later on, as we didn’t take anything with us, we thought it was safe to go back. I went home. But I did not notice that the other Tutsi just collected what belongings they could and left the area. They left me alone there. They went to the army garrison in Ruziba, where they felt they could be safer.

I remained at home for a while. The next evening, at around 4PM, Hutu killers arrived. They came from Mubone. Their clothes were torn. They were covered with the blood of our cows and goats which they have slaughtered. They tried to catch me but I ran away. They started chasing after me. I went through a banana plantation at the other side of the Mugere river and then managed to cross it and get to Ruziba. I was naked and had no shoes. Even around Mugere, it was unsafe for Tutsi. I cannot say that all of the Hutu were attacking us. But there were many of them who did. Then I saw Pierre, he was sitting in front of his house.

Pierre: It was around 6:30PM I when I saw Patrice. He didn't have a shirt on and he had no shoes. He was only wearing a pair of shorts. I knew him because I used to see him on the main road. I called him over. He stopped and looked at me. I asked Patrice what was happening. “There are people who are following me," he told me. "They want to kill me.

“You look awful, tell me exactly what happened,” I asked him.
